Licia says: This is one of my preferred method of cooking. I will marinate meats and veggies and cook them on my Fore-ahem-gril. I also use it on a regular basis to make grilled peppers, zucchini and other grilled veggies, even braised endives. I see no conflict in being a Cooking Light fanatic and a Fore-ahem fanatic at all.
The first thing you should do is check to see if the teflon lining is damaged in any way. Then, heat it up and when hot (if you have a thermostat) drop a teaspoon of water on it. It should sizzle but not evaporate instantly. If it is too hot, maybe your thermostat is broken.
There are a couple of things about the Foreman. Always heat it dry and apply the Spray Oil right before putting the food on. Because it is inclined, if you put it on too ahead of time, it drips down and your surface gets dry. Also don't forget to spray your food on top as well, since there is contact there too. I also make sure that the food I put on it, if it is frozen, doesn't have too much water crystals on it. This kind of steams up and burns your food
When I use the Foreman for vegetables, you can cut them up or leave them whole. As posted earlier, it is important that all have the same thickness, otherwise the upper portion of the gril just hangs over some of the food. I usually slice zucchinis in half lengthwise, slice eggplants in round slices, peppers can be hollowed of the seeds but left whole, as they will soften really quickly, or cut into strips, onions in thick slices, mushrooms left whole depending on the size. Basically, I spray all with Olive Oil Spray and dust herbs and minced garlic, heat up the machine, spray more Olive Oil, and arrange the vegetables on the gril, starting with the ones that take onger to cook. It would be onions, then eggplants and peppers, and zuchinis and onions last. After a while, I turn everything one quarter turn so that all four sides are grilled, spray a little more oil and wait until they are caramelized. The other day, I had pre-steamed belgium endives, and put them on the gril to brown. It was delicious as well.
